Chapter Sixteen
It was at least ten minutes before I managed to track down the rendezvous spot Leah had sent me, trying to follow the directions on my phone down dimly lit streets with only Spanish signs as my guide.
When I did finally step into the twenty-four-hour diner four blocks south of the manor, I was sure I looked a mess but was so happy to see three grim, but relieved faces waiting for me.
"How did you beat me here?" I asked Theo as I sat down beside him in the booth my friends had picked out.
"I've spent some time in this city," he pointed out. "I know my way around."
"And that thing? The teeth thing?"
Theo's eyes widened. "What even was that guy? I've never seen anything like it."
Which was all the more scary. If even Theo hadn't seen something like that before, what else didn't we know about yet?
And how many beings with multiple rows of shark teeth were wandering around in broad daylight, with no one else having any idea?
"Demon of some kind?" Leah guessed. "Vampires are the most common, at least from what I've heard, but they're only one of many. And definitely not the toughest to take on.â
"I lost him at the house. It took a bit of work, but I got him turned around enough to give myself a good few feet of a head start. By the time I made it out the door, there was no way he'd be able to follow. Not without being seen by dozens of humans, all with their phones at the ready, trying to catch videos of the fire."
"That was you guys, I assume?" I reached over and snapped a French fry off Arthur's plate. It was still warm, leaving grains of salt popping in my mouth, making me feel so incredibly human.
"Leah's idea," Arthur said, eyeing my hand begrudgingly. "If you want to freak out some vamps, fire is usually a safe bet. So you got the whole laptop, I hear?"
I pulled the pillowcase up from my lap and set the whole bundle in the center of the table. "Got it. But it had a pretty rough go of things for a minute there. Got banged around a fair bit. But I had a fight of my own before the fire was set, so by the time I was alone with a computer, I figured it was better to just grab the whole thing and get out of there. Shit! Has anyone talked to Xavier. I told him to be ready and then didn't have a chance to give him an update."
Leah nodded. "He's up to speed. And I think he's even going to meet us back at the house to see what he can get off the computer."
"Awesome. I am so ready to get back home. My mom didn't love the idea of my mysteriously disappearing for a day with no notice. Plus, I have to work tomorrow, and I have no idea how this jet lag is going to factor in.
